- New Imageplus-based software patient- record system for AS/400 [1]
- IBM has announced a new image-based patient medical records system for hospitals that runs on networked AS/400 machines. IBM says that an average patient's record can include from 75 to 125 paper documents, including diagnostic and operative reports, progress notes, laboratory results, and doctor's orders. Medical RecordsPlus/400 enables staff to electronically capture, store, process and retrieve signed documents. The new product facilitates the processing, filing and retrieval of patient records, and the simultaneous shared usage of records by various hospital departments. It is a set of extensions to the ImagePlus AS/400 integrated hardware and software, and the base system consists of a departmental AS/400 host running Workfolder Application Facility folder management software; PS/2 workstations for viewing, scanning and printing of documents; and an optical storage system for long-term storage data. Medical RecordsPlus/400 will be available on a limited basis as of September as an extension of ImagePlus. It costs from $31,408 to $56,196 depending on the AS/400 processor and yes, there are much cheaper ways of doing it using a Unix server and cheap personal computers. IBM says that the new system resulted from studies done in conjunction with eight US hospitals.
