3480/3490 is the machine type of a tape backup system based on the 1/2-inch cartridge which uses a linear serpentine recording technique.
Tape Drive
There a various models of 3480s/3490s: standalone single drive, rackmounted with autoloader, etc.
The alpha character following the dash indicates what kind of read/write drive is used.

Media
There are three kinds of 3480/3490 media. Unlike 3590 media, these do not have distinguishable by the color of the plastic insert on the cartridge, nor the single letter designation near the barcode label.

- 575 feet
- 3490E media
- putty color plastic bottom
- 1100 feet
Capacity
The capacity of a given 3480/3490 cartridge depends on the drive, the media, and compression.
It varies from 210MB to 1600MB per cartridge.
