5250 was the name of an IBM 'dumb' terminal family and is also the name of the communications protocol that the 5250 family used. Currently, the 5250 display is typically emulated by software running on a PC.

The 5250 terminals were connected to the host computer through twinaxial cable (twinax) in a daisy-chain fashion, up to 7 devices per chain, typically. In the early days of PCs, an emulation card was required to connect the twinax to the PC. Later, as LANs became more prevalent, a simple Ethernet cable was the only requirement, and terminal emulation moved to pure software.

The 5250 family of devices got more capabilities as time progressed, moving from monochrome (green on black or amber on black) to colour, from 24 x 80 to 27 x 132. There was a rare 5292 model 2 graphics-capable display as well. The 5250 family included printers as well as displays.
