Introduced in 2006, System i is the family name that encompases all IBM systems that came from the 1988 merge of the S/38 and the S/36 computers. System i incorporates all systems including the AS/400, the AS/400e, the iSeries and subsequent systems. The current machine in the System i family is designated the System i5.

Theoretically the next generation will be the System i6 when the POWER6 chips are released.
