Older releases are identified in the form of V#R#M# where
- V for version #
- R for release #
- M for modification #
When the M is zero, we often just refer to the V#R# portion & leave the M# part not shown.
The current release nomenclature is V.R where
- V for version #
- R for release #
The name of the operating system has changed over the years, so sometimes you may see a reference to CPF, XPF, OS/400 or i5/OS. The current name is simply i. All these names refer to the native operating system sold for use with IBM midrange computer systems in the AS/400, i5 and System i family.
